Owner and Head Chef: Michele Koopmann
"I have always loved the restaurant and food industry. I waitressed from the age of 15. I studied in the UK and completed an apprenticeship called an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) through Bass Taverns for 2 years and worked in various restaurant kitchens across London. I trained on the job and also helped open a few restaurants with Bass Taverns.
I left London in 1996 and lived in Johannesburg for 3 years, working for Cheffettes, a corporate catering firm. At the end of 1999, I came home to Cape Town where I worked managing a number of restaurants and this is when Gourmet Style began - out of a family friend's garage.
For 5 years I owned a small cafe in Wynberg whilst running Gourmet Style simultaneously. I closed the cafe when I got married and fell pregnant with my first daughter. I now work from home in my industrial kitchen so that I can be at home with my two beautiful girls.
The business has grown over time, but I have concentrated on keeping it personal. I still do all the cooking and hire on-site chefs, waitrons and barmen to help at events. I have also started using Silwood students which has been fun - they are eager-to-learn and are passionate about food as I am. A few of my waiters who have shown interest have been trained up to work with me in the kitchen.
Gourmet Style caters for private dinners, birthday parties, Christenings, weddings and a few bigger corporate and media events. I will cater for any event and love that every job is different and each one has its own challenges."
